COLONIE, N.Y. – The Union College field hockey team had its most dominant effort of the 2021 season on Wednesday night, controlling the game from the outset in a 2-0 win over Russell Sage College in a non-conference matchup at Afrim's Sports Complex.
Union (3-5) had complete control of the game from the very beginning, outshooting Russell Sage by a 34-1 margin and keeping the ball almost entirely in the offensive end for much of the contest.
After a scoreless first quarter, senior
Emma Davis got Union on the board first midway through the second quarter. With 7:09 to go in the frame, the senior used a backhand sweep to push the ball through a crowd in front of the Russell Sage net for her second goal of the season. The assist on the goal went to first-year
Kristen O'Shea, her first collegiate point.
Union went into halftime with the 1-0 lead and a 17-0 edge in shots.
The Dutchwomen added to their lead less than two minutes into the third quarter, when junior
Emily Dawson redirected a pass from senior
Katherine Sadak for her team-leading fifth goal of the season just 1:46 into the period. The visitors added another 17 shots to the ledger in the second half as well.
Senior
Gabriella Stein got her first collegiate start and picked up the victory, making one save to earn the shutout.
Union returns to Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium on Saturday, when the Dutchwomen get back into Liberty League play against William Smith College starting at 3 p.m.
