Dworkin Wins it in Double Overtime, 2-1

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College women's soccer team took on the Western New England Golden Bears Monday evening on College Park Field. The Dutchwomen were victorious, winning with just 34 seconds left in the second overtime period, 2-1.

Senior Bella Dworkin was the star of the evening for Union. Dworkin scored both goals in the Dutchwomen's double overtime victory. Juniors Mia Milliken and Melissa Murphy each added an assist in the game.

Dworkin got the scoring started in the 27th minute when she received the long throw in from Milliken and settled and turned towards the goal and lofted a shot that snuck in the top left corner to give the Dutchwomen a 1-0 led. Western New England would pull even when a pass from a corner kick and bounced around in the box before finding the foot of Kyleigh Weaton and ending up behind junior goalkeeper Abby Mitty with 18 seconds left in the first half. Union out shot Western New England by a narrow margin of 5-4. Mitty made three saves in the half.

In the second half, each team traded chances but neither team was able to find the back of the net in regulation. Union led the shot department in the second half 8-4. In overtime it was more of the same for the Dutchwomen. They dominated play but were unable to find the back of the net until Dworkin scored off a corner kick in the 110th minute of double overtime. She scored with the ball hitting off her and finding the back of the net for the golden goal winner. Murphy was credited with the assist on the game winner. Union out shot Western New England 10-1 in the two overtime periods. Mitty made a total of 4 saves in the game.

Union (3-4-1, 1-1-0) will be back in action when they travel to Hartford, C.T. for a 7 p.m. kickoff against Trinity College on Wednesday, September 29th.
