WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Senior
Emma Schleimer provided more late-game magic on Wednesday night with an 89th-minute goal to send the match into overtime, but it was Trinity (Conn.) College that struck the final blow as the Bantams scored late in the second overtime to pull out a 2-1 (2OT) victory over Union College in non-conference women's soccer action.
The late goal tarnished an otherwise incredible effort by junior goalie
Abby Mitty. The Union keeper kept the Dutchwomen in the game by recording a career-high 17 saves, the sixth-most saves in a game in program history and the most by a Union goalie in more than two decades, since Carolyn Stead '03 stopped 18 against New York University on September 9, 2001.
Trinity had the better of play for much of the contest on Wednesday evening, including a decisive 11-1 shot edge in the first half. However, Mitty kept the visitors in the game with seven saves as the teams went into halftime knotted at zero.
Union found its offensive legs in the second half, putting five shots on the Trinity net. However, it was the Bantams that struck first in the 58th minute, when Tori Simas was taken down in the box on a breakaway chance and Whitney Hoban converted from the penalty spot to put Trinity ahead.
The Dutchwomen started to increase the offensive pressure with 10 minutes left in regulation, putting several chances on target. That pressure was rewarded with 1:27 remaining in regulation, when junior
Emma Maley made a nice run through the Trinity defense and put a shot off keeper Jennifer Stuart. The ball caromed directly to Schleimer, who slotted it into an open net to tie the score.
But the visitors could not capitalize on that momentum, as Trinity regained its advantage in overtime and took the only eight shots of extra time. Mitty made one save in the first overtime frame to send the teams into a second overtime, but the Bantams broke through with 2:21 on the clock when Hannah Storozuk picked up the ball behind the Union backline off a broken play and beat Mitty for the golden goal.
The home team finished the match with a 36-10 edge in total shots.
Union will return to conference play on Saturday when the Dutchwomen head to Vassar College for a 3 p.m. kickoff with the Brewers.
