First Period Surge Pushes Clarkson Past Union

POTSDAM, N.Y. – A six goal first period by the Clarkson University men's hockey was too much for the Union College men's hockey team as they fell 8-2 at Cheel Arena Saturday night.

Junior Gabriel Seger and senior Josh Kosack were the goal scorers for the Dutchmen. Both goals came on the powerplay in the third period. Kosack extends his point streak to three games with the goal.

Clarkson jumped out to 3-0 lead in the first 9:41 of the opening frame before junior Garrett Nieto entered the game in relief. The Golden Knights scored an additional three goals to round out the first period.

The Golden Knights added a goal in the second period to push the lead to 7-0 before extending the lead to 8-0 1:26 into the third period.

For the second night in a row, Union put double digit shots on goal in the final frame, but it was not enough. After Clarkson committed back-to-back penalties, Union had a 5-on-3 opportunity for 51 seconds and capitalized. Junior Dylan Anhorn sent a cross-ice pass to senior Brandon Estes, who fired a one-timer through traffic that bounced off of Jacob Mucitelli's pads. Seger scooped up the rebound right in front of the net, sending it over the shoulder of Mucitelli.

Only 27 seconds later, the Dutchmen scored again on the powerplay. Junior Owen Farris picked up a pass from classmate Christian Sanda, attempting to put it past Muticelli during a scramble in front of the net. Kosack managed to backhand the puck into the net in the scramble for Union' second goal of the night.

Junior Connor Murphy exited the game 9:41 into the first frame, stopping two shots on five attempts. Nieto entered the game in relief, making 25 stops in 50:19 of play time. Jacob Mucitelli made 19 saves in the win for Clarkson.

The Dutchmen went 2-for-5 on the powerplay while Clarkson went 2-for-4 with the player advantage.

Union returns home to host Brown University on Friday, January 21. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Messa Rink.
