ALBANY, N.Y. – The Union College women's hockey team fell 2-0 to the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Engineers on Saturday morning at the fourth annual Capital District's Mayor's Cup at MVP Arena.
The previous three Mayor's Cups were all close games that came down to the wire and this game was no different. Both Union and RPI battled to find the first goal. RPI was able to find the back of the net twice in the final five minutes of the third period to win and take home the Cup for the third time.
After a first period where RPI out shot Union 14-6, Union came out flying and out shot RPI 14-4 in that period. Union tried to take advantage of the four opportunities but were unable to sneak one by the RPI goaltender. In the third period RPI tallied twice in a 2:12 span to take a 2-0 and hang on for the win.
Union was excellent on the penalty kill, preventing the Engineers from scoring on their five chances. Union went 0-6 on the advantage and registered an impressive 14 shots on goal on those six opportunities. Union won 31 face-offs in one of their best perfomances from the dot all season. First-year net minder
Sophie Matsoukas stopped 25 of 27 shots in the game.
Union falls to 1-3 in Mayor's Cups. The Dutchwomen will return to action next weekend, when they host Brown University at Messa Rink on Friday February 4. Puck drop is set for 6 p.m.
