Union Opens 2022 with Loss to #19 Harvard

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – A three-goal deficit in the first period was too much for the Union College men's hockey team to overcome as they fell 4-1 to #19 Harvard University on Saturday evening at the Bright-Landry Hockey Center.

Senior Josh Kosack was the lone goal scorer for the Dutchmen at 19:40 of the second frame with an assist by sophomore Tyler Watkins.

The Crimson jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first period. After a tightly contested opening few minutes, sophomore Sean Farrell beat junior Connor Murphy stick side at 9:43 of the first period to put the Crimson up 1-0. Harvard tallied their second goal of the frame at 17:36 on the powerplay off the stick of junior Nick Abruzzese. Less than a minute later, first-year Alex Gaffney made it 3-0.

After only one penalty in the first period, both teams combined for four penalties in the second. The Dutchmen killed off all three penalties in the second period. Kosack was called for charging at 17:34, which was advantageous. After serving the penalty, Kosack received a pass coming out of the box from Watkins, and ultimately scored on a breakaway to cut into the Crimson's lead 3-1.

Harvard made it 4-1 in the third period when junior Henry Thrun's shot went off a Union defender and into the net.

Murphy made 36 saves in the loss and falls to 5-9-2 on the season. Junior Mitchell Gibson earns the win for Harvard, stopping 19 shots and improves to 6-4-0.

The Dutchmen are slated to hit the road for an ECAC Hockey matchup on Friday at St. Lawrence University. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Appleton Arena.
