Field Hockey Closes Out League Play on Senior Day

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College field hockey team recognized its five graduating players with Senior Day on Sunday afternoon at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium. The University of Rochester did not play the role of welcoming guests, however, dealing Union a 3-0 defeat in both teams' Liberty League finale.

Before the game, Union celebrated its five senior members: Jill Bove, Emily Dawson, Isabel Lubin, Eliza Munns and Caroline Werner.

Zoe Conomikes had a big game for Rochester (13-4, 6-1 Liberty League), assisting on the game-winning tally and adding two goals herself. Nikki Mercer also scored for the Yellow Jackets, who clinched the top seed in the Liberty League Tournament with the win.

Union (10-5, 2-5 Liberty League) struggled to get many offensive chances for much of the game, with Rochester posting a 15-2 edge in total shots through the first 45 minutes of play. Union took five shots to Rochester's zero in the fourth period, but the home team could not get any in the back of the net.

Union nearly held Rochester off the scoreboard for the entirety of the opening quarter, but the Yellow Jackets scored with 38 seconds on the clock to take the lead. Mercer corralled a Conomikes shot off a penalty corner and found the net to put the visitors ahead after 15 minutes. Conomikes added her first goal of the game with 3:45 left in the second quarter to double the Rochester lead, and then added another in the third quarter to finish off the scoring.

First-year Sophie Brady made six saves and Lubin added a defensive save for Union, while Kara Houston stopped five shots to earn the win for Rochester.

Union will look to end the home schedule on a high note on Wednesday with a non-conference game against Smith College beginning at 7:30 p.m. in Schenectady.
