SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Senior
Caroline Werner scored the only goal of the game with less than a minute remaining in regulation as the Union College field hockey team finished off the home slate with a 1-0 win over Smith College on Wednesday evening at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium.
The win is the ninth in 10 games at home for Union (11-5) this year, setting a new program record for home wins in a single season. The team's 11 victories so far in 2022 are tied for the fourth-most in a season in program history and are the most since 2008.
Despite having most of the game's best scoring opportunities, it took more than 59 minutes for the home team to finally crack the scoreboard. Union earned its eighth penalty corner of the night with 1:00 on the clock and, after a save by goalie Rory Harper and a defensive save by Karlie Guimond, a penalty stroke was whistled on the Pioneers. Werner stepped to the spot and whistled a shot into the top-left corner for her second goal of the year and the game's only score with 45 ticks left.
Union finished the game with a 16-4 edge in shots and an 8-1 advantage in penalty corners, as the home team had opportunities all night long but could not convert until late. Harper had nine saves and was helped by a pair of defensive saves from her defense, while first-year
Sophie Brady made one save to earn her 11th victory of the season, moving her into a tie for second place on the school single-season wins list.
Union will close out the 2022 season on Saturday with a 1 p.m. matchup at Stevens Institute of Technology.
