Providence Blanks Union

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Union College women's hockey team lost 7-0 to the Providence College Friars on Friday afternoon from Schnieder Arena. Union was held scoreless for the first time this season.

Providence came out of the dressing room flying and for long periods hemmed the Dutchwomen in their own zone. The Friars found the back of the net on the penalty kill when they blocked a dump in attempt and went the other way on a breakaway and scored shorthanded. Providence took a 1-0 lead in the locker room. Union was out shot 10-14 in the period and each team went 0-1 on the power-play.

The Friars added two more goals in the second period to jump out to a 3-0 lead. Union was out shot 7-4 in the period. Union went 0-2 on the player advantage in the period.

In the third period, it was more of the same from Providence. They found the back of the net four more times including once on the player advantage. Union went 2-3 on the penalty kill in the period including killing off a 5 on 3.

Sophomore Sophie Matsoukas made 29 saves in the effort for Union. Union controlled the face off dot, winning 28 of 51 draws. Senior Emily King lead all skaters with 16 face off wins.

Next up for Union (2-3-0) will skate against the Terriers of Boston University on Saturday afternoon. Puck drop from Walter Brown Arena is set for 4 p.m.
