Union Drops Overtime Decision to #20 UConn

HARTFORD, Conn. – It was a back-and-forth battle that took more than 60 minutes, but the Union College men's hockey team fell 4-3 in overtime to the #20 University of Connecticut Saturday evening at the XL Center.

Eight different Dutchmen found the scoresheet in the loss. Junior Liam Robertson scored his first goal of the season and 17th career goal in the opening frame. First-year Cal Mell tallied his first collegiate goal in the final minute of the second period and junior Ben Tupker added his first as a Dutchman in the third period.

Union turned to first-year Kyle Chauvette in goal, who made 28 saves in his first collegiate start.

Sophomore Caden Villegas initially got the scoring started with a goal 2:05 into the first period of the game, but it was waived off due to goaltender interference. Union did not let the overturned goal deter them as Robertson tallied his first goal of the season at 11:21 of the first period. Robertson intercepted a pass and fired a wrister from high in the slot to beat goaltender Arsenii Sergeev.

UConn tied the game 4:41 into the second period with a short-handed goal by Jake Flynn. The Huskies struck again later in the period with a power-play goal by Nick Capone. Union knotted the game with 43 seconds left to play in the second stanza with Mell's first career goal. Nate Hanley forced a turnover and chipped a pass to sophomore Cullen Ferguson. The defender fired a shot that Mell redirected into the net to send the teams into the locker room tied.

Union came out hot to start the third period, scoring only 48 seconds into the frame. Sophomore Nic Petruolo gained possession in the defensive and sent a cross-ice pass to first-year John Prokop. The first-year took the puck up the ice, splitting the UConn defense and sent a backhanded pass in front of the crease to Tupker, who capitalized on the open net. UConn tied it up at 7:23 of the period from Jake Percival.

Sixty minutes was not enough and the game went to overtime. Chase Bradley scored the game winner 1:49 in the overtime period to give the hosts the victory.

UConn netminder Sergeez saved 27 shots to earn his second win of the season.

Union is back in action at home on Thursday against Atlantic Hockey foe Bentley University. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Messa Rink.
