Union Falls to St. Lawrence

CANTON, N.Y. – The Union College men's hockey team fell 4-2 Saturday night to St. Lawrence University at Appleton Arena.

In the loss, Union falls to 4-7-1 on the season and 2-2-0 in ECAC Hockey play. The Saints move to 5-4-0 on the season and 2-0-0 in league play.

First-year Carter Korpi tallied his fifth goal of the season and sophomore defender Cullen Ferguson recorded his first collegiate goal. First-years Cal Mell and John Prokop and junior Chaz Smedsrud all registered assists on the night.

Union went 1-for-2 on the powerplay and 6-for-7 on the penalty kill.

The Dutchmen opened the scoring on the powerplay at 5:49 of the first period. Ashton Fry was sent off for elbowing and Union took an offensive zone faceoff. After winning the draw, first-year John Prokop sent the puck to junior Chaz Smedsrud in front of the net. Smedsrud's initial shot was blocked, but a crashing Korpi managed to get a piece of the rebound for the score.

St. Lawrence added a power-play goal of their own in the second period. Max Dorrington sent a shot from the slot for the score. Tyler Cristall gave St. Lawrence a lead later in the second stanza, beating senior Connor Murphy glove-side.

The Saints tacked on two more goals in the third. Ashton Fry found the back of the net before Will Arquiett pushed the lead to three. Ferguson scored his first collegiate goal, an extra-attacker tally, at 19:50.8 of the third period. He sent a shot from the top of the circle that passed a defender and over Emil Zetterquist's left shoulder.

Murphy made 19 saves in the loss. Zetterquist stopped 17 shots and picked up an assist in the win.

Union returns home to host Dartmouth on Friday. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Messa Rink.
