Women's Hoops Upends Clarkson for First Conference Win

POTSDAM, N.Y. - Senior Kendall Degenhardt went for a career-high 22 points and first-year Jelena Perovic added a season-high 10 points to lead the Union College women's basketball team to a 53-45 road win over Clarkson University on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Gymnasium.

Degenhardt had another huge game for Union (3-3, 1-1 Liberty League) in leading the visitors to their first conference win of the year, hitting 10-of-19 shots from the field and both free throw attempts to pace all scorers. Perovic added 10 points, three rebounds and two blocks in 13 minutes off the bench, while senior Megan Lee hauled in a team-high 11 rebounds.

Bella Doyle netted a team-high 13 points and a game-high 12 rebounds for Clarkson (2-3, 0-2 Liberty League).

Neither team led by more than four points in a tight opening frame, with a layup by Degenhardt with 1:21 providing the high-water mark before a subsequent three by Clarkson lowered the margin to one point (12-11) after 10 minutes. Union limited the Golden Knights to 2-of-11 shooting in the opening frame.

The visitors built up their largest lead of the opening half at 22-15 with 4:04 to go, after a Perovic bucket capped an 8-0 run. Perovic added another basket in the final 30 seconds to give the Dutchwomen a 26-20 lead at the break.

Union did not trail in the second half, as the visitors were able to keep the home team from mounting any sort of run.  Union increased the advantage to eight points at 38-30 on a Degenhardt layup with 2:55 remaining in the third quarter, and then closed out the game by keeping Clarkson at least two possessions behind for all the final frame, never allowing the lead to get smaller than five. Degenhardt had eight of Union's 15 points in the final stanza and the team hit 6-of-8 free throws in the final minute to seal the win.

Union shot 35.5 percent (22 of 62) from the field on the day and limited Clarkson to just 28.0 percent (15 of 50) shooting, including a 2-of-17 mark from long range. The visitors dominated in the paint, posting a 38-18 edge in scoring from close range.

Union will play its final conference game of 2022 on Tuesday with a matchup at Vassar College beginning at 5:30 p.m.
