PRINCETON, N.J. – It took almost 48 scoreless minutes of play, but it was the Princeton University Tigers that emerged victorious over the Union College men's hockey team, 2-0, Friday night at Hobey Baker Rink.
"When you have an opportunity, you have to finish," said head coach
Josh Hauge. "We had some opportunities, but we were unable to get one in the back of the net."
The Dutchmen went 4-for-5 on the penalty kill. Senior goaltender
Connor Murphy made a season-high 36 saves in the loss.
Both teams generated chances in the opening frame with each team getting a chance on the powerplay. Union put a lot of pressure on Princeton netminder Ethan Pearson in the later half of the period, but the game remained scoreless going into the second.
The penalty kill unit got quite a bit of work in the second period. The special teams unit killed off three penalties and held Princeton to only three shots total on the powerplay.
Union's best chance of the night came on an early powerplay in the third period with the team generating three shots on the player advantage. Princeton finally broke the scoreless tie at 12:01 of the third period. The initial shot took Murphy out of position, and the rebound bounced off a Union defender into the net. Princeton broke through again with a powerplay goal with 3:26 to play. Noah de la Durantaye picked a corner and snuck one past Murphy blocker side.
Union falls to 6-9-1 on the season and 3-4-0 in ECAC Hockey play. Princeton improves to 5-7-0 overall and 4-6-0 in conference.
Pearson made 22 stops for the win and picked up his fourth shutout of the season.
