Fast Start Pushes Brown Past Union 3-1

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The College women's hockey fell to ECAC opponent Brown University, 3-1, on Friday evening from Meehan Auditorium. The Bears found the back of the net twice in the first period, on their way to a 3-1 win.

Senior Emily King scored Union's lone goal in the game. First-years Stephanie Bourque and Amanda Quan grabbed assists on King's eighth goal of the season.

Brown started the scoring just 1:57 into the first period, as the Bears were able to get behind the Dutchwomen defense and beat sophomore Sophie Matsoukas with a back-hand shot. Union was awarded a power-play opportunity four and a half minutes into the period.

Union won the face off and after working the puck around the outside, Bourque found classmate Quan who's one timer was blocked down, before King corralled the loose puck and beat the Brown net minder. Union pulled even on King's eighth goal of the season.

With around seven and half minutes to play in the first period, the Bears ended up behind the Dutchwomen defense once again, and beat Matsoukas on the breakaway.

After a scoreless second period, Brown found the back of the net once again to extend their lead to 3-1.

Brown out shot Union 30-27 in the game while dominating the face-off circle 33-17. The Dutchwomen went 1-1 on the power-play and were a perfect 1-1 shorthanded as well. Matsoukas stopped 27 of 30 shots in net for Union.

Union (8-7-1, 3-4-1) will skate tomorrow against #3/4 Yale from Ingalls Arena. Puck drop slated for 3 p.m. from New Haven, C.T.
