Union Falls to #15/16 Cornell

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Knotted at one apiece going into the final period, #15/16 Cornell University rattled off four goals and the Union College men's hockey team fell, 5-2, Saturday night at Messa Rink.

Senior Josh Kosack scored his second goal of the weekend with line mates sophomore Ville Immonen and junior Christian Sanda registering assists. First-year Thomas Richter scored his first collegiate goal in the final stanza with assists from junior Gabriel Seger and senior Brandon Estes.

The home team jumped out to a 1-0 lead 6:16 into the opening period. After Sanda forced a turnover at center ice, Immonen chipped the puck into the offensive zone, where it skittered along the wall behind the net. Kosack scooped it up, but his initial shot was blocked by Nate McDonald. The senior jammed home his own rebound to give Union the 1-0 lead.

Cornell tied it up only 1:05 of the second period. Sam Malinski fired a shot from the right point and Kyle Betts tipped it in. After back-and-forth chances on both sides, the game remained tied going into the final frame.

The Big Red jumped out to a 2-1 lead only 37 seconds in when Betts scored his second of the night. Cody Haiskanen found the back of the net at 7:00 to give Cornell a 3-1 lead. Richter cut the lead to one at 11:10 of the third period. Seger sent a pass up the right-wing wall to Estes, who sent a pass to Richter waiting in the slot. The first-year redirected the puck past McDonald to make it 3-2. Cornell added two more goals to put the game out of reach, 5-2.

Junior Connor Murphy made 27 stops in the loss while McDonald recorded 29 saves in the win.

Union will hit the road for the final regular season road trip to face Yale University. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Ingalls Rink.
