Union Clinches Home Ice in Win Over Dartmouth on Senior Night

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Sophomore Liam Robertson scored the game-winner 3:45 into overtime and junior Connor Murphy made 23 saves as the Union College men's hockey team defeated Dartmouth, 3-2, on Senior Night at Messa Rink.

With the win, Union moves into seventh place in the ECAC Hockey standings with a 9-11-2 conference record and locked in home ice for the first round of the playoffs. The Dutchmen will either play Princeton or Brown depending on the results of the game between Harvard and Princeton tomorrow.

Junior Owen Farris scored the first short-handed goal of his career, and Union's second this season from senior Brandon Estes. First-year Collin Graf tallied his second goal of the weekend with assists from junior Gabriel Seger and Dylan Anhorn. Seniors Josh Kosack and Estes added assists to Robertson's game winner.

After out-shooting Dartmouth 15-9 in the opening frame, it was the Dutchmen who scored first at 7:07 of the second period. On the penalty kill, Estes forced a turnover in the defensive end and chipped the puck up to Farris in the neutral zone while both teams were on a line change. Farris went in on a breakaway to beat Clay Stevenson stick-side.

Graf gave Union a 2-0 lead with 3:14 left in the third stanza, firing a shot into the top corner to beat Stevenson. But less than a minute later, Dartmouth pulled their goaltender and got an extra-attacker goal from Braiden Dorfman with 2:21 to go to get back within one. The Big Green pulled Stevenson again soon after and again it paid off, as Steven Townley tied the game with only 57 seconds to go.

Dartmouth played for the win in overtime by pulling Stevenson again with 2:18 remaining into get a 4-on-3 advantage. But after a pair of stops by Murphy, Estes knocked away a pass from the goalmouth to the stick of Kosack, who flipped it down the ice for Robertson to retrieve and poke into the empty net to give Union the win.

Murphy made 24 saves in the win to improve to 12-16-3 on the season. Stevenson made 36 stops in the loss.

After the game, Union recognized the five members of the senior class in a post-game ceremony: Estes, Ryan Sidorski, Fletcher Fineman, Michael Ryan, and Kosack. Equipment assistant Matt Kreines and team manager Sumit Singh were both honored as well.
