AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Union College baseball team dropped a pair of games to Elmhurst University Monday afternoon, falling 16-6 in game one and 17-10 in game two at Lake Myrtle Park.
Game One: Elmhurst 16, Union 6
Junior
Jono Santos led the way for the Dutchmen at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two hits, including his first career homerun, with two RBI and a run scored. Senior
Justin Cabanas went 2-2 with a single and double as well as an RBI.
Elmhurst jumped out to an earl lead on a solo shot in the first inning. Union responded in the bottom half of the first inning when sophomore
Kobe Mentzer scored ona dropped flyball. Union broke the 1-1 tie on the bottom of the third as Santos smacked his first career home run.
Elmhurst then exploded for five runs in the fourth, three in the fifth, four in sixth, and three in the seventh inning. The largest lead of the game for the Bleu Jays was 13-2 in the top of the sixth inning.
Union rattled off four more runs in the bottom half of the sixth. Senior
Jack DiNanno singled to begin the inning and advanced to third base on an error and ground out. With two outs in the inning DiNanno scored on a pass ball. Cabanas then proceeded to double in classmate
Jack Milone. Sophomore
Noah Schott batted next and singled in Cabanas, and Santos doubled in Schott for the fourth run of the inning. All of these runs came wot two outs in the inning.
Union fell to Elmhurst 16-6. Sophomore pitcher
Bryce Fournier (0-2) threw four innings in the loss while striking out six Blue Jays.
Game Two: Elmhurst 17, Union 10
Junior
Dan Choate went 4-4 in the game inducing a double, two RBI, and two runs scored for the Dutchmen on Monday afternoon. Classmate
Julian Lightburn was 2-2 in the in the contest with 3 RBI and a double and triple.
Like game one, Elmhurst broke the ice in the opening frame, scoring on a pass ball. Union grabbed its first lead of the game in the top half of the second inning scoring three times. DiNanno doubled to start the inning and Santos followed with a single, placing Union runners on the corners with no outs. Choate then singled in DiNanno. First-year
Sam Strazza reached on a fielder's choice, advancing Santos to third base. Junior
Jack Davis plated Santos on a ground out. Sophomore
Thomas Parisi singled in Strazza to give Union a 3-1 lead.
Elmhurst went on to score six runs in the second, five in the third, two in the fourth, and three in the fifth to grab a 17-6 lead. Union score four times in the top pf the seventh to cut the Blue Jay led to 17-10. Following a single, double, and walk, first-year
Nick Hiltsley scored Choate on a ground out. Parisi walked to reload the bases and Lightburn tripled in all three runners with two outs.
Union was unable to finish the comeback and lost 17-10 to Elmhurst.
Union (3-3) will get back in the diamond tomorrow as they take on Wisconsin-Eau Claire at 11 a.m. and game two against Augustana at 2:30 p.m.
