Dutchmen Fall to Wisconsin-Eau Claire and Augustana

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Union College baseball team continued their opening week in Florida, falling 18-1 to the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and losing 6-3 to Augustana College Tuesday afternoon at Chain O'Lakes Stadium.

GAME 1: UW-Eau Claire 18, Union 1

First-year Kyle Zaslaw went 1-for-1 off the bench with a run scored and classmate Sam Strazza went 1-for-2 with an RBI.

After two scoreless innings, UW-Eau Claire struck first, capitalizing on a failed pickoff attempt and the ensuing error by the pitcher to take a 1-0 lead. The Blugolds scored one batter later on a passed ball to make it 2-0 and added six runs in the fourth inning to break the game open.

Union broke the scoreless bid in the sixth inning when Zaslaw drew a leadoff walk before advancing to second two batters later on a groundout. Strazza dropped a single into left field to bring Zaslaw around the bases. The Dutchmen loaded the bases with two outs, but a fly ball to right field ended the inning.

The Blugolds scored eight runs in the top of the seventh to take the victory.

First-year Calvin Place is tagged with the loss, surrendering four runs on four hits in 3.1 innings of work.

GAME 2: Augustana 6, Union 3

Sophomore Thomas Parisi went 3-for-4 with a run scored in the leadoff spot while sophomore Kobe Mentzer and senior Jack DiNanno both went 3-for-5 at the plate. Junior Jack Milone scored a run in a 2-for-5 effort with an RBI.

Union started the second game of the day by opening the scoring in the first inning. Parisi singled in his first at-bat of the game before advancing to second on a balk. Milone singled to bring Parisi around the bases for the score.

Augustana broke through in the third inning, putting three on the board to take a 3-1 lead.

The Dutchmen responded in the fourth stanza, as back-to-back singles put junior Julian Lightburn at second base. Mentzer singled to bring home Union's second run to make it a one run game.

Augustana tacked on a run in three consecutive innings to take a 6-2 lead.

Union was able to get one back in the ninth. Milone led off the inning with a single before advancing on a groundout to second base. DiNanno sent a single into left field to bring Milone to third before Strazza hit an RBI-single to make it a 6-3 game.

Junior Harry Azadian pitched six complete innings, striking out three and surrendering four runs on six hits. Sophomore Kyle Patlove pitched two innings in relief, striking out one and allowing two runs on three hits.

The Dutchmen wrap up their Florida trip with a doubleheader against Lawrence University tomorrow at Lake Myrtle Park in Auburndale. First pitch is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
