HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The Union College men's tennis team fell 8-1 to #30 Wisconsin-Whitewater and 4-3 in a close match against West Virginia State on Monday morning at Hilton Head Beach and Tennis.
Match One: #30 Wisconsin-Whitewater 8, Union 1
First-year
Ian Schunk was the lone winner of the morning for the garnet and white winning in straight sets 6-3 and 6-2.
Both senior
Ioannis Binopoulos and first-year
Ben Jacobs spilt the first two sets before falling in the super tiebreaker. Binopoulos fell 4-6 in the first set and responded with a convincing second set win, 6-1 to force a super tiebreaker. He fell 12-10 in the super tiebreaker
Jacobs lost his first set 0-6 and bounced back with a 6-3 win to force a super set, before falling 10-8 in the super set.
Match Two: West Virginia State 4, Union 3
In match two of the day, Union doubles pairing of Schunk and sophomore
Khai Ton won their pairing 6-0. They were the lone pairing to secure a victory in men's doubles.
Juniors
Thomas McGuire and
Ryan Dagan as well as first-year
Kurtik Appadoo were all victorious on the singles side. Dagan won in straight sets 6-0 and 6-4. McGuire split the first two sets 3-6 and 6-3 before responding well in the super tiebreaker winning in convincing fashion 10-3.
Appadoo lost the first set 3-6 and forced a super tiebreaker with a 6-4 win and ultimately win 10-6 in the super tiebreaker.
Union (1-4) will get back on the courts tomorrow, March 22 with matches beginning at 9 a.m. against Augustana and 2 p.m. with Allegheny.
