Comeback Falls Short for Women's Lax in Conference Opener

TROY, N.Y. – Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute outscored the Union College women's lacrosse team 4-1 in the decisive fourth quarter as the Engineers came back to defeat the Dutchwomen, 15-13, in Union's Liberty League opener on Wednesday afternoon at ECAV Stadium.

Junior Dana Truini led Union (1-2, 0-1 Liberty League) with a career-high four goals while also grabbing four ground balls. Classmate Drew Charlton scored three times and both junior Sydney McPartlon (one goal, two assists) and sophomore Anna Smith (two goals, one assist) recorded three points as well for the visitors.

Sabrina Torcellini scored a game-high six goals to pace Rensselaer (4-2, 1-1 Liberty League).

Playing for the first time in 10 days, Union struggled out of the gates, allowing RPI to score five goals in the first 4:29 of the contest to build up an early edge. The quarter featured a combined 12 goals in 15 minutes, with Union getting scores from four different players to head into the second quarter down 8-4.

The Dutchwomen started their comeback in the second stanza, outscoring the Engineers 5-2 to get back within a goal at the half. Truini scored three straight goals as part of a 4-0 run midway through the frame, and senior Grace Heiting provided the final goal of the frame to make the score 10-9 RPI at the half.

The visitors continued their run with the first three goals of the third quarter, with Charlton, Smith and first-year Greta Maurer combining to give Union its first lead of the game at 12-10 with 2:04 left. However, Union went more than 16 minutes without a goal after that, as the Engineers scored the final goal of the third quarter and the first four of the final frame to build up an insurmountable advantage.

Senior Jenna Paszek made 12 saves in goal for Union, which took 30 shots to RPI's 37. Senior Elizabeth Hernberg led the defensive effort with five ground balls and three caused turnovers, while Heiting also caused three turnovers on the day.

Union will return home on Saturday, when the Dutchwomen host Skidmore College in a Liberty League matchup beginning at noon at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium.
