SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Junior
Sydney McPartlon matched her career-high with six goals and seven points to lead the Union College women's lacrosse team to their first Liberty League victory of the season, 14-12 over Skidmore College on Saturday afternoon at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium.
McPartlon was incredibly efficient on the afternoon, scoring her six goals on just seven shots to lead all players in goals. Senior
Grace Heiting also played well with three goals and an assist, while first-year
Greta Maurer recorded her first career multi-goal game for Union (2-2, 1-1 Liberty League).
The Dutchwomen started the game strong, scoring the first three goals of the contest. Heiting opened the scoring 4:10 into the game with an unassisted tally and scored again under five minutes later, with a goal by junior
Dana Truini in the middle. McPartlon's first of the game countered a three-goal stretch by the Thoroughbreds to give Union a 4-3 lead after 15 minutes.
The game turned in Union's favor in the second quarter, when the home team scored seven goals on nine shots to take a commanding 11-4 lead into the half. McPartlon had four of the seven goals for Union during the run, including a beautiful behind-the-back pass off a Heiting feed, while Maurer, Heiting and junior
Drew Charlton also scored for the Dutchwomen.
After junior
Katie Julien scored 1:37 into the third quarter to regain the team's eight-goal edge at 12-4, the scoring suddenly went cold for Union, with Skidmore scoring five straight goals to get back within three. Gabriella Modesti was involved in four of the five tallies with a goal and three assists, while goalie Cate Spaulding, who came on late in the second quarter, stopped all four shots she faced.
The margin shrunk even more after the visitors scored the first two goals of the fourth quarter, but Maurer responded to the second Skidmore goal with one of her own just 14 seconds later to increase the lead to two at 13-11 and McPartlon added a late insurance goal to finish off the victory.
Union finished the game with a 32-23 edge in shots and also caused 12 turnovers as a team, led by a game-high four by junior
Elizabeth Hernberg. Senior
Jenna Paszek made seven saves to earn the win.
Union will return to action on Wednesday with a non-conference matchup against Williams College set for 6 p.m. in Schenectady.
