SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – With the senior class leading the way, the Union College men's tennis team took a huge step toward clinching a postseason berth with an impressive 8-1 victory over Rochester Institute of Technology on Friday afternoon at the Union Tennis Courts.
The win moves Union (5-9, 3-4 Liberty League) to the brink of clinching a Liberty League Tournament berth for the second time in the last three completed seasons.
Seniors
Ioannis Binopoulos and
Cameron Klepper were dual winners for the Dutchmen on Senior Day, while classmate
Nick Weitzman also made his return from injury to pick up a doubles victory as well.
Binopoulos and Weitzman got Union on the board first at third doubles, defeating Christian Berko and Grahith Movva by an 8-4 score. Klepper and sophomore
Bailey McAtee built on the lead by beating Carter Casimir and Joel Pho by the same score at the second flight.
Although RIT got one point back at first doubles, Union responded emphatically by sweeping all six singles matches to secure the victory.
Binopoulos was again the first to finish in singles play, defeating Berko for the second time with a 6-1, 6-4 first-singles win. Jacobs moved Union to the brink of the victory with a second-singles triumph, knocking off Movva with a pair of 6-4 sets. Klepper clinched the victory with his eighth straight singles win, once again moving up a flight to fourth singles to defeat Pho, 6-3, 6-1.
Junior
Aidan O'Brien had the most arduous task of the day, needing three sets to outlast Jake Wolicki, 6-1, 3-6, 6-4. First-year
Ian Schunk and junior
Thomas McGuire finished off the singles sweep for the Dutchmen, with Schunk defeating Casimir at fifth singles, 6-2, 6-3, and McGuire using a pair of 6-3 sets to topple Jacob Meyerson.
Union will close out Liberty League play tomorrow, when the Dutchmen travel to Vassar College for a 12 p.m. matchup.
