Women's Lacrosse Can't Get Past #8 William Smith

GENEVA, N.Y. – A fourth-quarter comeback came up a few goals short for the Union College women's lacrosse team on Saturday afternoon, as the Dutchwomen fell to #8/4 William Smith College by a 14-8 margin at Urick Stadium.

Union (4-9, 3-5 Liberty League) outscored William Smith (14-1, 9-0 Liberty League) by a 5-1 margin in the fourth quarter, but big first and third quarters were enough to keep the Herons in control throughout the contest.

Senior Grace Heiting led the Dutchwomen with four points on three goals and an assist, while sophomore Anna Smith added two goals. First-year Morgan Adams also scored her first collegiate tally in the fourth quarter for the visitors.

William Smith scored the only five goals of the opening quarter to take control of the contest early, outshooting Union by a 10-2 margin. Junior Dana Nelson ended the run for the visitors with a man-up tally midway through the second stanza, as the teams combined for just three goals in the frame.

Union got back within five early in the third quarter on goals by Heiting and Smith, but William Smith scored the period's final five goals to take a 13-3 lead into the fourth.  The Dutchwomen outshot the Herons 8-6 in the fourth quarter and scored five of the period's six goals, with single goals by Smith, Adams and junior Drew Charlton followed up by two from Heiting.

William Smith finished the game with a 32-19 edge in shots. Senior Jenna Paszek made six saves in 19 on-target attempts to take the loss.

Union will close out the regular season with a pair of games at Frank Bailey Field, beginning on Wednesday at 6 p.m. against Bard College.
