SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Union College put a huge scare into #17 St. Lawrence University on Friday evening, but the Saints outscored the Dutchwomen 5-1 in the decisive fourth quarter to escape with a 16-12 victory in Liberty League women's lacrosse action at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium.
Senior
Grace Heiting led Union (2-6, 1-3 Liberty League) with five points on four goals and an assist while also controlling a team-high seven draws. Junior
Katie Julien netted a career-high three goals with an assist for four points, while first-year
Greta Maurer also scored a season-best three times on four shots. Charlotte Powell led all players with a game-high six goals for St. Lawrence (10-1, 4-1 Liberty League).
The Saints looked to be in firm control of the game early on, scoring eight of the first 10 goals of the contest. But Heiting kept the home team in the game early by scoring their first four tallies of the game, including one late in the first quarter and another to start the second stanza that made the score 8-4. Following a SLU tally soon after, Union rattled off four of the period's last five goals, including goals by Julien and Maurer off beautiful feeds from junior
Drew Charlton in the final two minutes that made it a two-goal game (10-8) at the half.
Union continued its momentum into the third quarter, getting four saves from sophomore
Hannah Dubinsky and outscoring SLU 3-1 to knot the score at 11 after 45 minutes. Julien had a pair of goals and junior
Dana Truini added one for the Dutchwomen in the frame.
However, the momentum came to a halt in the fourth period, as the visitors put five on the board to create some separation. The Saints controlled 5-of-7 draws in the final period as part of a 22-11 edge on the day, helping to limit Union possessions and keep the home team at a distance after a pair of early goals.
Senior
Elizabeth Hernberg had another good afternoon leading the Union defense, grabbing four ground balls, causing three turnovers and serving as a one-woman clearing unit for most of the day. Dubinsky also played well coming on in relief in the first quarter, finishing with eight saves.
Union will return to action tomorrow with a 2 p.m. home matchup against Clarkson University.
