TROY, N.Y. – The Union College baseball team clinched the #4 seed in the East in the upcoming Liberty League Crossover Series after dropping the series finale with Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, 6-4, Sunday afternoon at Robison Field.
The Dutchmen will face Ithaca, the top seed in the West, in a best-of-three series beginning with a Saturday doubleheader in Ithaca. The winner of the series will move on to the four-team double-elimination Liberty League Tournament.
Senior
Colby Nash went 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and sophomore
Kobe Mentzer scored a pair of runs for the Dutchmen.
Sophomore
Ryan Cowles hit a leadoff double in the first inning before back-to-back walks loaded the bases. Nash drove an RBI-single into left field to keep the bases loaded and sophomore
Thomas Parisi hit a sac fly to give the Dutchmen a 2-0 lead in the opening stanza.
The Engineers struck back at the bottom of the second, cutting into the lead with an RBI-single of their own to make it a 2-1 game.
Union loaded the bases again in the third after hitting three singles in a row. Parisi hit his second sac fly of the game before sophomore
Sebastian Pike loaded the bases again with Union's fourth single of the inning. Senior
Justin Cabanas reached on a fielder's choice to give the Dutchmen a 4-1 lead.
RPI added a single run in both the third and fifth to cut Union's lead to 4-3. The Engineers took the lead in the sixth, scoring two runs. A solo homerun in the seventh sealed the series win for RPI.
Sophomore
Kyle Patlove takes the loss for the Dutchmen after pitched 3.2 innings of relief and surrendering three runs on three hits with two strikeouts. Sophomore
Deven Smith earned the start for Union, allowing three runs, two earned, on five hits, and one strikeout in 4.1 innings of work. Ben Koomey gets the win for the Engineers, striking out four and not allowing a hit in 6.2 innings.
The Dutchmen wrap up the final game of the regular season on Tuesday when they host Trinity College. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. at Shuttleworth Park.
