SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College Women's soccer team kicked off the 2022 season with a 2-0 win over the Scarlet Raiders in their home opener. Senior
Emma Maley opened the scoring and junior
Amanda Sgueglia added some insurance with her first of the season.
The Dutchwomen (1-0-0) opened the scoring in the 16
th minute when sophomore
Sam Friedman was dragged down in the box, and was awarded a penalty. Maley took the kick and buried the ball into the right corner to give Union a 1-0 lead. This is Maley's first of the season.
Union kept up the pressure for the majority of the half. Senior
Abby Mitty made one save in 45 minutes of action.
In the second half, Union returned to form with more and more pressure on the Scarlet Knights. They were rewarded for the effort, when junior
Liz DiCecco drove to the end line and lofted a cross to the far post where class mate
Amanda Sgueglia was waiting and cashed in on the doorstep. This tally doubled the lead for Union.
First-year goalie
Rachel Berliner earned her playing action of the season in the second half. The Scarlet Raiders carried play for the second part of the second half. Berliner stopped all four shots she faced to help preserve the combined shut out between her and Mitty.
Union finished the game leading in shots 12-11, and corners 3-1.
Union gets back to the pitch on Saturday, September 3 at 2 p.m. when they play host to Utica University from College Park Field.
