SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – It nearly took all 90 minutes for the Union College women's soccer team to push past the Utica University Pioneers on Saturday afternoon from College Park Field. Junior
Amanda Sgueglia scored in the 89th minute when she lofted a shot into the top left corner to put the Dutchwomen and Union (2-0-0) went on to win 1-0.
Sgueglia scored in her second straight game for Union and senior
Melissa Murphy added an assist. Union has not lost at home since September 25 of last season, a streak of seven matches (6-0-1).
In the first half, Union took the action to Utica, registering six shots to the Pioneers' one. Union was unable to find the back of the net in the first half even with seven corner opportunities in the first half.
The second half was more of the same for the Dutchwomen as they continued to pepper the Utica net minder. Union finished the half with 13 shots on goal and 19 for the game. That 19th shot proved to be the difference maker. Murphy collected a bouncing ball at midfield and threaded a pass to the streaking Sgueglia, who was able to lift a shot into the far-left corner from the top of the 18-yard box to give Union the lead.
Union finished the game out shooting Utica, 19-3. The goalie tandem of senior
Abby Mitty and first-year
Rachel Berliner again split time in the net, but neither needed to register a save in the game.
Union will now hit the road for a six-game road trip before returning home on October 1. Their next opponent is SUNY Oneonta on Saturday, September 10. Kick off from Oneonta, N.Y. will be at 12:30 p.m.
