ONEONTA, N.Y. – Sophomore
Sam Friedman scored twice as the Union College women's soccer team shut out SUNY Oneonta 2-0 on Saturday afternoon from Red Dragon Field.
Union is 3-0 for the first time since 2014 when they started the season 6-0. The Dutchwomen have also not allowed a goal yet this season which is equal to 270 minutes of game action. This is the longest streak without allowing a goal to start the season since 2007 when they didn't allow a goal for the first five games of the season.
Friedman found the back of the net in the seventh minute when she scored a blocked shot at the top of the six-yard box. The initial shot was blocked from senior
Liz DiCecco and Friedman was able to cash in the rebound. This was Friedman's first of the season and gave Union a 1-0 lead.
Union kept the pressure up the remained of the first half, throwing nine shots at the frame to the Red Dragon's four in the half.
In the second half, SUNY Oneonta brought a lot of pressure outshooting Union nine to seven in the half, but it was Union who added a second goal to extend their lead. Friedman once again found the back of the net, this time coming off a pass from senior
Emma Maley. Maley threaded a pass trough the defense and Friedman was able to beat the goalie to the far post, making it 2-0 Union.
First-year
Rachel Berliner made her first collegiate start in net stopping both shots she faced in 45 minutes of action. Senior
Abby Mitty played in the second half and stopped 4 shots, helping Union its third straight shutout.
Union (3-0-0) will get back on the field tomorrow as they take on the Hartwick Hawks at 12 p.m.
