Bove's OT Game-Winner Moves Union to 4-0 for First Time Since 1993

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Senior Jill Bove scored the game-winning goal with 5:08 remaining in double overtime as the Union College field hockey team moved to 4-0 in the first time in 30 years with a thrilling 2-1 (2OT) victory over SUNY Oneonta on Wednesday evening at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium.

The win keeps Union (4-0) undefeated on the season, winning the first four games of the year for the first time since the 1993 team started off with five straight victories. Seniors Bove and Emily Dawson had the goals for the home team in the win, while first-year Sophie Brady made five saves to earn her fourth straight victory in net.

The final goal of the night started in the defensive zone, when junior Haley Dineen intercepted an Oneonta pass and deked by a pair of Red Dragons before dishing off to Dawson at midfield. Dawson sent a ball into the nearside corner for first-year forward Alyssa Pavano, whose pass attempt was deflected right to an onrushing Bove, who shuffled the ball into the far-side corner for her first goal of the year.

Union dominated play for the opening 30 minutes, keeping Oneonta without a shot and earning several good scoring opportunities, but four saves by Jennifer Tumino kept the game scoreless at the half. Union finally broke through in the third period, when sophomore Grace Goddard corralled a rebound and fired a shot in front that was tipped home by Dawson for her team-leading sixth goal of the season.

Oneonta turned up the pressure in the fourth quarter, firing eight of their 11 shots in the fourth stanza alone and earning seven penalty corners. It was the seventh corner that finally resulted in a goal for the Red Dragons, as Carly Waszczak picked up a rebound and beat Brady with 3:02 remaining in regulation.

Both goalies made one save in the first overtime session to keep the game going before Bove's game-winner. Union finished the night with a 19-11 edge in shots.

Union will look to keep the momentum going on Saturday with a non-conference matchup at Elms College beginning at 5 p.m.
