SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – After a long 10 days in between games the Union College men's soccer team got back on the field and rolled to a 3-1 win over the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts on Tuesday evening from College Park Field. Union had three different goal scorers and five total players tallied a point in the win.
Senior
Nate Boule, junior
Robbie Michalski and classmate
Luca Richo all found the back of the net for the Dutchmen. Senior
Christian Rufo and sophomore
Diego Pascual-Sanchiz added an assist.
Both teams played an even 40 minutes in the first half, until Boule found daylight in the 18-yard box and beat the goalie to the near post with a shot. Pascual-Sanchiz gathered in a ball sent to the corner and sent a cross to the hear post, where Boule was able to get his right foot on the ball and finished the one timed shot into the back of the net to give Union a 1-0 lead.
Union out shot MCLA 8-2 in the first half and generated four corner kicks to none for MCLA.
Michalski opened the scoring in the second half for Union in the 51st minute. Rufo sent a long free kick over the defense from his own defensive end and Michalski was able to run onto the long pass and find the back of the net with his right foot. This extended the Union lead to 2-0 early in the second half.
The Trailblazers would not go away quietly as they increased their pressure following the Michalski goal and found some luck with a bouncing ball that they were able to capitalize on to cut the Union lead in half. Union put the game out of reach seven minutes later when Richo dribbled along the end line through three Trailblazer defenders and roofed a shot underneath the crossbar to extend Union's lead back to two. This result would hold and Union won 3-1.
The Dutchmen out shot the Trailblazers 20-4 in the game with 10 of them finding the frame for Union. Senior
Sean Speck faced three shots and frame and stopped two of them in the win for Union.
The Dutchmen (2-2-1) kick off Liberty League play this weekend when they welcome in the Saints of St. Lawrence to College Park Field for a 3 p.m. kick off on Saturday, September 24.
