PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Union College men's hockey team fell to ECAC Hockey rival Brown University Friday night, 6-2, at Meehan Auditorium.
Union falls to 8-13-1 overall on the season and 3-8-0 in conference play. The Bears improve to 6-10-2 and 2-7-2 in conference.
Sophomore
Caden Villegas and junior
Tyler Watkins were the two goal scorers for the visitors. Watkins scored his team-leading seventh goal of the season short-handed. First-year defenders
Cal Mell and
John Prokop each registered an assist.
The last time Union scored a short-handed goal was on Feb. 26, 2022 against Dartmouth when current senior
Owen Farris found the back of the net.
Brown jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first period starting with a goal from Lynden Grandberg at 2:35 of the opening frame. The Bears struck again at 9:30 of the period with a power-play goal from Bradley Cocca. The initial shot by Matt Sutton was missed, but Cocca sent a backhand over senior
Connor Murphy's left shoulder for the score. The Bears added a second power-play goal after James Crossman weaved his way through traffic and fired a one-timer.
Brown extended their lead to four goals only 2:29 into the second period off of a wraparound shot from Jonny Russell. Union broke through at 8:40 of the second stanza off a shot from Villegas. Mell made a great defensive play and subsequent possession before finding Villegas parked on the doorstep to put it past Brown netminder Mathieu Caron.
The home team pushed the lead to four goals when Ryan Shostak flipped home a rebound over a sprawling Murphy. Brett Bliss made it a 6-1 game at 8:40 of the third period with Brown's third power-play goal of the night. Union added one final goal with 48.6 seconds left to play. On the penalty kill, Prokop made a pass up the middle to chip it ahead to Watkins, who sent it bar down from bottom of the right wing circle.
Murphy stopped 27 shots in the loss to fall to 7-11-1 on the season. Caron made 24 saves in the win to improve to 6-9-2.
Union returns to action tomorrow with a tilt against the Yale University Bulldogs. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Ingalls Rink.
