ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Two goals in the second period were enough to push the University of Rochester past Union College by a 2-0 score in Liberty League field hockey action on Friday afternoon at Fauver Stadium.
After a first period that saw the teams combine for just one on-target shot, Union (6-6, 2-2 Liberty League) came out strong in the second stanza, earning a pair of penalty corners and firing three shots on goal that were denied by Kara Houston.
After fending off the early attack, Rochester (10-5, 3-1 Liberty League) came back with the game's first goal 6:08 into the second period from Kayla Ballas. The Yellow Jackets added another in the final minute of the period, converting on their first penalty corner chance of the game to take a 2-0 lead into halftime, despite Union holding a 7-3 edge in shots in the frame.
The Garnet Chargers continued to have the better of play in the second half, outshooting the Yellow Jackets 4-1 over the final 30 minutes, but could not find the back of the net.
Union finished the day with a 13-7 edge in total shots and a 6-3 advantage in on-target attempts, but Houston made six saves to keep her team ahead. First-year
Marion Stuntz made one save for Union in a losing effort.
Union will return home on Sunday for a pivotal Liberty League matchup at 2 p.m. against William Smith College, before which Union will recognize its five graduating players with a Senior Day ceremony.
