Dorsey's 2OT Winner Caps Thrilling 2-1 Comeback Victory

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – First-year Molly Halliday tied the game with less than a minute remaining and sophomore Megan Dorsey netted the game-winner with 1:39 left in the second overtime as the Union College field hockey team stunned William Smith College with a 2-1 (2OT) victory in Liberty League action on Sunday afternoon at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium.

The victory is a huge one for Union (7-6, 3-2 Liberty League) in the race for a Liberty League postseason berth, as the Garnet Chargers move up into a tie for third place in the conference standings with William Smith (8-6, 3-2 Liberty League) and the University of Rochester with two conference games remaining.

Dorsey regained the team lead in goals with her eighth of the season and her second 2OT game-winner in the last eight days. After Union earned its seventh penalty corner of the game, Dorsey weaved past the initial defender to create space and fired a shot into the lower right corner for the game-winner, setting off a celebration from the Garnet Chargers.
That was just the latest heroics for Union on the afternoon, as the team went more than 59 minutes without a goal before knotting the score in dramatic fashion. With first-year goalie Marion Stuntz pulled for a 12th field player, the home team rushed down the field and senior Sophie Ruhl found Halliday alone at the back post to tap in the game-tying goal with 39 seconds remaining.
William Smith had a chance to ice the game with 1:45 remaining, but Hannah Huston did not connect on a penalty stroke attempt that gave Union a second life that was taken full advantage of.

The first 30 minutes was a defensive struggle between two evenly matched teams. The sides combined for just one shot and one penalty corner during a very tight first period of play. The game opened up slightly in the second stanza, but Stuntz made three stops and William Smith's Kristen McCormick made one stop to keep the game scoreless through two periods.

The Herons earned their first penalty corner of the game 2:19 into the third period and the visitors managed to convert, as Kate Barilla fired a shot from the near side of the arc off a stick in front and into the net for the game's first goal. Both teams had one shot saved as well as William Smith took a 1-0 lead into the fourth frame.

Stuntz ended up with nine saves to earn the victory, while McCormick had six stops for the Herons. William Smith finished the day with a slight 14-13 edge in shots.

Union will remain home on Tuesday to close out the home non-conference slate with a matchup against Utica University beginning at 6 p.m. at Frank Bailey Field.
