SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - The Union College men's soccer team allowed two goals in the first 21:11 of their match with Hobart College Saturday afternoon at College Park Field, and would end up falling to the Statesmen on Senior Day by a score of 2-0.
Â
Before the contest, Union honored their six members of the Class of 2024.
Sean Speck,
Kurt Mahlke,
Robbie Michalski,
Luca Richo,
Ethan Layton and
Christian O'Sullivan were all recognized for their contributions to the program.
Â
After all three of the goals in Union's victory over Ithaca Friday came off of corner kicks, Hobart cashed in with a pair of goals off corners of their own Saturday.
Â
In the 14th minute, Quinn Phillips finished home a pass from Amad Miller after a scramble in the box. Less than eight minutes later, Frederick Madsen found himself in the right spot, after a 50/50 header off Hobart's third corner of the game fell to the foot of the junior, who provided the insurance.
Â
After that, the Garnet Chargers matched the Statesmen's pace with six shots each the rest of the way, with Union putting two shots on goal compared to Hobart's one. Hobart outshot Union 7-0 in the first half, with their only two shots on goal finding the back of the net, before Union outshot the visitors 6-4 in the final 45 minutes.
Â
Union had a handful of opportunities, in the second half especially, to bring themselves back into the contest. Junior
Ethan Klopfer hit a post off a beautiful header from a throw by senior
Christian Rufo in the 58th minute, and senior
Robbie Michalski pushed a shot just past the left post on a run down the right side 90 seconds later.
Â
Union (7-5-2, 4-1) now sits in a four-way tie of second place in the Liberty League with four games remaining in the regular season, with three of those on the road and two of them against fellow second-place sitters. The first of those matches comes Wednesday, when the Garnet Chargers travel to Canton to take on St. Lawrence at 4:00 PM.
