CANTON, N.Y. - Senior
Christian Rufo's goal in the 81st minute would draw the Union College men's soccer team even with St. Lawrence late in their match Wednesday, and the two teams would go on to tie, 1-1.
After St. Lawrence took a 1-0 lead in the 75th minute, Union would set up with a corner less than six minutes later looking to tie the game. Junior
Lucas Crowley sent the ball towards goal from the corner spot, and after a scramble in the box saw the ball drop, Rufo took possession and rifled a shot into the top corner to tie the game.
Each team would take one more shot in the final minutes, but neither would find the net again.
Rufo has now scored twice in the past four games, tying a career-high he set with a pair of goals in his sophomore season. The Needham, Massachusetts native now has six points on the year, tied for fourth-most on the team and best amongst the squad's defense.
The two sides worked out to an even contest after St. Lawrence dominated the first half before Union dominated the second. The Saints outshot the Garnet Chargers 13-6 (4-2 on goal) in the first 45 minutes, while Union returned with an 11-5 (4-3 on goal) shot advantage in the back half of the match.
First-year
Paul Agne provided six saves in net for Union in the game.
Union and St. Lawrence would each leave with a point apiece, keeping them tied in second in the Liberty League standings with 13 points, three points behind leader Hobart. Union has three conference games left on their regular season schedule while St. Lawrence has two.
The next opponent for the Garnet Chargers is RIT, heading to Rochester on Saturday for a 1:00 PM kick.
