ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Jaidan Fahrny's goal 9:38 into the third period would be the difference in Rochester Institute of Technology's 2-1 victory over Union Saturday, completing the weekend sweep for the Tigers.
Â
First-year
Iliana Smith scored her first collegiate goal for Union a little under halfway through the contest, firing a wrister on the power play from the top of the right circle off the inside of the far post to give the Garnet Chargers a 1-0 lead.
Â
It didn't take long for the Tigers to respond, as Emma Roland tied the game right back up after an extended opportunity around the Union net 1:47 after Smith's goal.
Â
After Union accounted for 18 minutes of penalties in Friday's 4-1 loss, their 11th penalty of the weekend would be their most costly. On the power play, the righty Fahrny would receive a pass below the goalline to the left of the Union net on her forehand, carry just in front of the line, and finish top shelf for her first game-winning goal in a Tigers uniform.
Â
Union played the final 4:21 with an extra attacker after pulling sophomore
Emily Evans from the net and fired seven shots in that time, but were stoned by goalkeeper Sarah Coe with their three shots on goal.
Â
Evans stopped 26 shots in her first start of the year, including the first 11 that she faced, making a number of stops to keep the Garnet Chargers in the game and playing confidently from the moment the game started.
Â
Union (3-5-0) will kick off ECAC Hockey play next weekend, traveling to face Harvard on Friday at 6:00 PM before they visit Dartmouth on Saturday at 3:00 PM.
