King's Third Period Goal Draws Union With Dartmouth, 1-1

HANOVER, N.H. - Emily King's power-play goal halfway through the third period drew the Union College women's hockey team even with the Dartmouth Big Green Saturday afternoon, and the two teams would go on to play to a 1-1 tie.

King's goal came after Dartmouth broke the scoreless tie 15:18 into the second period. Cally Dixon's deflection off a Kenzie Bachelor pass was ruled a goal after the official deemed it just barely crossed the goal line, and the goal stood after the video review was deemed inconclusive.

On Union's fifth power-play of the afternoon and third in the third period alone, King cashed in on a rebound from the shot of first-year Maddie Leaney to knot things up with 9:45 left in regulation. Union attempted 12 more shots compared to just one for Dartmouth in the final minutes of regulation, but were unable to find the back of the net.

After firing 54 shots with 29 of them on goal in regulation, Union continued their offensive dominance into overtime. The Garnet Chargers ripped nine more attempts at the goal, but all seven that were on cage were stopped by Eleanor Rogers.

In Union's net, junior Sophie Matsoukas put together another strong performance. Matsoukas stopped 19 of Dartmouth's 20 shots on goal in the contest, totaling 42 saves against the 44 shots she faced on the weekend. Both goals came on redirections Matsoukas was in position for.

Union went 1-for-7 on the power-play in the contest, while Dartmouth went 1-for-5. Union's penalty kill went 6-for-7 this weekend, while the power play went 3-for-11.

The tie wraps up a successful opening ECAC Hockey weekend for the Garnet Chargers, as the team returns to Schenectady with four out of a possible six points after Friday's win over Harvard and Saturday's draw at Dartmouth. It's the program's most successful conference opening weekend since 2017, when Union won both games at home against Brown and Yale, and their best ever first conference road trip weekend in the Division I era.

Union will open up the home part of their ECAC Hockey schedule next weekend, when they host Cornell on Friday at 6:00 and Colgate on Saturday at 3:00.
