SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - The Union College women's soccer team fell to the RIT Tigers by a score of 3-1 Saturday afternoon. The program celebrated the afternoon focusing on Breast Cancer Awareness, wearing special black and pink warmup shirts with initials of loved ones touched by the disease as well as accessorizing all gear in pink.
RIT jumped out to a quick lead, as Elena Onodera opened the scoring just over five minutes in. They added their second goal on the opposite end of the half with Amber Flynn scoring with less than two minutes before the half.
After Olivia Harris made it 3-0 less than a minute into the second half, sophomore
Anne Pearl brought the Garnet Chargers back into the game. Senior
Cassidy Careccia served in a far-side corner for Union that went through the goalie's box, and after first-year
Ashley Sheldon sent a header back towards the center of the box, Pearl ripped a shot off the bottom of the top of the net to put Union on the board.
Union showed resilience in the second half after RIT dominated the opening 45 minutes, spending much more time with possession and in their offensive half in the back half of the contest.
Sophomore
Rachel Berliner did all she could in the first half to keep Union in the game, coming up with five big saves. She added one more in the second half with Union spending more time in their offensive end to finish her day with six.
RIT outshot Union in the contest, 14-5, with a 10-3 lead in shots on goal. The Tigers also doubled Union's number of corners, 8-4.
Pearl and junior
Sam Friedman led Union with two shots apiece.
Union sits just outside the playoff picture with two games remaining in the regular season. The Garnet Chargers will visit Capital District foe Skidmore on Wednesday for a 7:00 PM kick before hosting Senior Day next Saturday when they take on Clarkson at 3:00.
