Late Goal Brings Skidmore Even With Union Women's Soccer

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - An 85th minute goal brought Skidmore to a 1-1 tie with Union Wednesday night, and the two teams would play to a tie in a crucial match for the Garnet Chargers playoff push.

Sophomore Vanessa Jorgensen opened the scoring in the 9th minute. With Skidmore spending much of the early minutes on the attack, Union used a Skidmore turnover to their advantage with the Thoroughbreds playing forward.

Senior Cassidy Careccia started the attack, playing the ball towards midfield for junior Sam Friedman. Friedman turned towards the midfield circle and played a beautiful pass to an attacking first-year Taylor Bovardi, who was one-on-one with her defender and with Jorgensen joining the rush, looking to get past a retreating second defender. Bovardi put a perfect touch on a ground pass into the 18-yard box to get the ball to Jorgensen, who took a couple touches, put a juke on the Skidmore goaltender, and put it past her to give Union the early lead.

Skidmore tied things up with just over five minutes left in the match. Skidmore sent in a cross from the midfield attacking zone, and a scramble for a loose ball that saw goalkeeper sophomore Rachel Berliner collide with a Thoroughbred attacker fell to the foot of Hannah Fetzer, who finished her first goal of the season.

Each team added one final shot in the final minutes, but neither were able to find the back of the net for a second time.

Skidmore outshot Union in the opening half, 6-5, with Union leading in shots on goal, 3-2, before the hosts dominated in the final 45 minutes with a 12-2 advantage. Bovardi accounted for Union's lone shot on goal in the second half, a rocket of a shot high in the 51st minute saved by the Skidmore goalkeeper to keep her team within one.

Berliner stopped seven shots in the match, good to tie her third-best tally of her career, enduring a barrage of a Skidmore attack that held possession for almost 60% of the match.

Union heads into the final day of the regular season of Saturday, two points out of a playoff spot. The Garnet Chargers will need a victory when they host current fourth-place Clarkson for Senior Day at College Park Field at 3:00 PM, while also needing some help from around the Liberty League to clinch a postseason berth.
