Garnet Chargers Dominate Elmira in 5-0 Victory

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - Five different goalscorers found the back of the net in Union's full 90 minute dominant effort by the Garnet Chargers in their victory over Elmira College Tuesday evening, defeating the Soaring Eagles by a score of 5-0.

Even beginning the game without possession of the ball, Robbie Michalski had Union's first shot and Union had registered a corner kick in the opening minute, setting the tone for the Garnet Chargers for the rest of the game.

Union would register three more shots before junior Alan Daniel found the back of the net to give the Garnet Chargers a 1-0 lead. On a set throw-in in Union's offensive end, the defender made a run to the net and fired a left-footed strike for his first collegiate goal.

Senior Ethan Layton would be next to register his milestone first goal, adding some insurance in the 37th minute. Layton would find himself in the right place at the right time, as a Wyatt Goldfisher shot rebounded to the left-footed reach of the midfielder that just squeaked by his sliding defender.

Union wrapped the first 45 minutes with a 12-2 shot advantage, including a 6-1 shot on goal lead. The Garnet also had five corner kicks in the opening half, while Elmira did not register one.

Union put together almost as strong a second half as they had in the first.

With Elmira controlling possession at the top of their own 18-yard box, Diego Pascual-Sanchiz forced a turnover, made a touch, and placed his right-footed touch perfectly past the oncoming goalie to make it 3-0. The tally was the Spaniard's first goal of the season.

Six minutes later, Michalski cashed in on a beautiful charge to goal. Lucas Crowley sent an aerial ball perfectly down the right sideline for Michalski to chase, and after he bodied off his defender playing the ball that sent him to the ground, the East Longmeadow, Massachusetts native split a pair of defenders on his run to the net and proceeded to finish in the middle of three others to extend the lead to four. Michalski has now scored in back-to-back games and retakes the lead amongst his teammates with five goals on the campaign.

The Garnet Chargers added a final tally for good measure in the 82nd minute. Lucas Montalto took a pass from Ethan Klopfer on the defensive side of midfield and carried all the way to the top of Elmira's 18-yard box before firing a left-footed shot to cap a beautiful run for his second goal of the year.

Overall, Union outshot Elmira 9-4 in the second half for a 19-6 advantage in the game. Union put 11 shots on net, compared to Elmira's two, both easily saved by reigning Liberty League Rookie of the Week Paul Agne. Union registered nine points in the contest by nine different players. 23 Garnet Chargers saw game action.

Union (5-4-2) returns to Liberty League action in their next match on Saturday, traveling to Bard College to take on the Raptors at 2:00 PM.
