SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Sophomore
Megan Dorsey scored at 1:39 of double overtime to send the Union College field hockey team to their first win over Liberty League rival Skidmore College in almost three decades in a dramatic, rain-soaked affair on Saturday afternoon at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium.
Union's last victory against the Thoroughbreds was on September 28, 1996, a 4-1 win in Saratoga Springs. The last home win over Skidmore was a 2-1 victory on September 23, 1995.
Union jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a goal by sophomore
Rachel Ostiguy in the final seconds of the first quarter. After a Skidmore defender intercepted a pass in front by Dorsey, Ostiguy poked the ball past a diving Victoria Bodnar for the score.
The visitors responded with a goal by CC Wetter late in the second quarter to tie the game at halftime. Wetter scored the initial go-ahead goal 8:06 into the third quarter to give Skidmore a 2-1 advantage.
The Union defense buckled down and fended off seven penalty corners in the first four minutes of the final quarter. Down a goal with only seven minutes to play, junior
Grace Goddard scored her fourth goal of the season with a rocket from the top of circle to knot the game at two apiece.
Union put the pressure on in the first overtime frame, registering four shots, three on goal, while holding the Thoroughbreds to only one shot.
The Garnet Chargers drew a penalty corner only 90 seconds into the second overtime frame and sent a pass to Dorsey at the top of the circle. The sophomore took a few steps, dodged a defender, and fired the game-winning shot from 10 yards out.
First-year
Marion Stuntz made her fourth collegiate start and made a career-high 10 saves in the win to improve to 3-1 on the season.
Union is back in action on Friday with a Liberty League tilt at the University of Rochester beginning at 4:00 p.m.
