CANTON, N.Y. – The Union College men's hockey team started their weekend trip to the North Country with a 4-3 win over St. Lawrence University on Friday night at Appleton Arena.
Sophomore
John Prokop registered three assists to lead the team in points. Sophomore
Brandon Buhr scored a goal and an assist. Seniors
Tyler Watkins and
Ville Immonen and sophomore
Nate Hanley all found the back of the net in the win.
Despite out-shooting the Saints 14-9 in the first period, St. Lawrence took a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes of play. Tyler Cristall capitalized on a two-on-one opportunity and struck from the bottom of the left-wing circle.
Union opened the second period with three unanswered goals in the first 8:01. Prokop gained possession behind the Union net and banked it up the boards to Watkins in the neutral zone. The senior fired a shot from the point that bounced off of Ben Kraws' blocker and into the net. Union found the back of the net again less than five minutes later on a breakaway goal by
Nate Hanley. Junior
Caden Villegas forced a turnover in the Union zone and dished it to Buhr. The sophomore passed the puck to Hanley in the neutral zone who took it up the ice on a breakaway and scored. Buhr added his third powerplay goal in three games at 8:01 of the period. With the Garnet Chargers on the powerplay, Prokop sent a pass to Buhr in the top of the slot. Buhr backhanded the puck past Kraws to make it a 3-1 game.
The Saints struck back on the powerplay with 4:31 remaining in the middle stanza to make it a one-goal game. Felikss Gavars sent a wrister from the slot that got past sophomore
Kyle Chauvette for the score.
Each team found the back of the net in the final frame. Union scored the eventual game-winner at 2:26 of the third period. Junior
Josh Nixon sent a pass from his knees back to Prokop. The blueliner sent a shot from the top of the right-wing circle that bounced off a St. Lawrence defender. Immonen collected the rebound and put it past a diving Kraws. The Saints tacked on one more with 3:47 to play in the game off the stick of Ty Naaykens. St. Lawrence pulled Kraws in favor of the extra attacker, but Union held on for the victory.
Chavette stopped 27 shots in the win, including 12 in the third period to improve to 4-3-0 on the season. Kraws made 25 saves in the loss with 14 stops in the opening period.
Union closes out the weekend trip at Clarkson tomorrow. Puck drop is at 4:00 p.m. at Cheel Arena.
