Women's Hockey Defeated by Brown, 2-0

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - A second period power-play goal gave Brown a mid-game lead over Union Saturday afternoon, and the Bears added an insurance goal in the third at Meehan Auditorium to defeat the Garnet Chargers by a score of 2-0.

The first period went by at a hasty pace, as the two teams went multiple stretches of continuous play, with the first 20 minutes of hockey being completed in less than a half hour of real time. Brown controlled much of the possession in the opening frame, but the Garnet Chargers were the ones with the best looks on net and ultimately outshot the Bears 7-4.

Even though Union took control of play in the second period, the Garnet Chargers took their first penalty of the afternoon with 4:30 left and Brown made them pay. After India McDadi sent a shot on net from range that was saved by junior Sophie Matsoukas, the rebound trickled through the feet of senior Allison Smith, and Margot Norehad fired a shot through the tight window between Smith and a Brown forward in front of the net to break the scoreless tie.

With 12:10 left in the third, McDadi picked up a loose puck and swung through the neutral zone to gain entry into Union's end. McDadi carried the puck all the way to the dot, and sent a quick wrister short side high to give Brown a 2-0 lead. From there it was all Brown, as the Garnet Chargers were unable to muster a response.

Union outshot Brown in the game, but Brown goalie Kaley Doyle posted her second consecutive shutout against Union as the senior stopped all 26 shots from the visitors. Matsoukas was strong in her own right for Union, making 22 saves.

Half of Union's shots came from three players- first-year Maddie Leaney led the way with five, while junior Maren Friday and sophomore Stephanie Bourque each had four. Union went 0-for-2 on their power play opportunities.

The Garnet Chargers will have the next two weekends off, pairing a bye week with a break for Thanksgiving, and are set to return to their road trip December 1st when they head to Quinnipiac.
