Defense Paces Men's Hockey in 5-2 Win over Stonehill

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Union College held Stonehill College to 12 shots in 60 minutes and four players recorded multi-point outings as the Garnet Chargers got back in the win column with a 5-2 victory on Friday afternoon at Messa Rink.

Senior Ben Tupker, junior Josh Nixon and sophomore Carter Korpi all had a goal and an assist to lead Union (5-5-0), while sophomore John Prokop registered a pair of assists. Junior Cole Kodsi and senior Tyler Watkins also found the net for the home team on the evening, with Kodsi netting his first goal in garnet.

Frank Ireland and Henri Shreifels picked up a goal and an assist each for Stonehill (0-13-0), which was outshot by a 31-12 margin on the day.

Union dominated play for the opening 20 minutes, holding Stonehill without a shot on goal and keeping possession in the offensive zone for large periods of time. The total shots attempted were 21-3 in favor of the home team, but none of the Garnet Chargers' nine on-target tries got past goalie Dylan Meilun. Union did get a puck into the net, but the goal was called back due to being played with a high stick. Both teams went 0-for-1 on the power play in the opening frame as the teams went into the first intermission scoreless.

It did not take the Garnet Chargers long to get on the scoreboard in the second stanza, scoring twice in the first 2:36. Just over two minutes into the period, Nixon redirected a feed into the low slot by Prokop for his third goal of the season, with senior Ville Immonen earning the secondary assist. It was Watkins with an unassisted tally 33 seconds later to double the lead, as he intercepted a clearing attempt at the point and skated into the high slot before depositing a wrist shot past Meilun for his third of the year.

The Skyhawks got their first shot on goal with 12:42 on the clock in the middle frame, but by that point the two goals had put Union in control. The home team held a 22-4 lead in shots after 40 minutes of play.

The teams traded goals in the first four minutes of the third period, with Tupker's redirection of a shot by junior Cullen Ferguson making it a three-goal advantage before Ireland got the Skyhawks on the board 2:23 later. The Garnet Chargers opened up a four-goal edge on tallies by Korpi and Kodsi 1:58 apart later in the frame before Stonehill got a power-play goal with 3:45 on the clock to finish out the scoring.

Sophomore Kyle Chauvette finished the game with 10 stops to pick up his fifth win of the year, while Meilun turned aside 26 shots for Stonehill. The Garnet Chargers went 0-for-3 on the power play and the Skyhawks scored once on four man-advantage chances.

Union and Stonehill will be back at Messa Rink tomorrow for game two of the weekend series beginning at 4 p.m.
