SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - #6/#9 St. Lawrence scored the first six goals to race by Union at Messa Rink Saturday afternoon, defeating the Garnet Chargers by a score of 6-1. Sophomore
Amanda Quan scored the lone goal of the afternoon for the Garnet Chargers.
Â
St. Lawrence used two first period goals to take a two-goal lead into the first intermission. Mae Batherson's fourth goal of the year on some tic-tac-toe passing on a three-on-two rush gave the Saints a 1-0 lead, before Julia Gosling's 10th of the year with 54.9 left made it 2-0.
Â
The Saints exploded for 14 shots in the second period, finding the back of the net four times. Kiley Mastel's power-play less than a minute into the middle frame set the tone for Gosling, Anna Segedi, and Batherson to all find the back of the net later in the period.
Â
Union responded strongly in the final frame, putting 15 shots on net of their own, with Quan getting the hosts on the board 7:31 into the final frame.Â
Â
A strong forecheck from Quan forced SLU to send the puck around the back of their own net, and senior
Celeste Beaudoin won a puck battle in the corner. Beaudoin used her strength to send a pass to the back of the net to sophomore
Riley Walsh, who found Quan in the slot. After Quan whiffed on her initial shot, which brought St. Lawrence goaltender Kassidy Lawrence out of her butterfly, Quan regathered and fired a quick wrister far side for her second goal in the past six games.
Â
The two teams played to a 30-30 draw in the shots on net category, after Union won the first and third periods by a combined seven shots, and SLU took the middle period 14-7. St. Lawrence was 2-6 on the power play on the afternoon, and did not take a penalty.
Â
First-year
Monja Wagner was strong in her time in goal for Union, rejecting 17 of the 19 shots she saw in her 36:27 of action.
Â
After a four-game homestand against four top 10 teams, Union does not return home until December 9th, when they take on Rensselaer following five consecutive games on the road. The trip begins this upcoming Friday at 6:00 PM at Yale, before Union goes to Rhode Island to take on Brown on Saturday at 3:00.
