Union Drops Clasico Opener to Albion, 56-36

BAYAMON, Puerto Rico – The Union College women's basketball team kicked off play at the 2023 Puerto Rico Clasico on Tuesday afternoon, falling to Albion College by a 56-36 score at Coliseo Ruben Rodriguez.

Senior Kennedy Clark was the top scorer for Union (3-5) on the afternoon, netting 12 points in 30 minutes of action. Junior Jenna Forman led the team with a game-high 12 rebounds to go with five points, while senior Grace Enselek chipped in seven points and eight boards.

Emma Cooke paced all players with 14 points and added 10 caroms for Albion (6-5), followed by Lolo Reed with 11 points and five assists.

Playing their first game in nearly two weeks, the Garnet Chargers struggled shooting from the field, finishing the afternoon at 21.1 percent (12 of 57) from the floor and 14.3 percent (3 of 21) from long range. The Britons also dominated play around the basket, posting a decisive 54-34 edge on the glass and outscoring Union 38-4 in the paint. Albion did not shoot particularly well on the day either, finishing at 34.2 percent (25 of 73) and 13.3 percent (2 of 15) from behind the arc.

Clark and Enselek scored all seven points for Union in the opening period, as the team fell behind early but stayed within striking range for much of the frame. The Garnet Chargers hit 5-of-6 shots from the line in the second stanza to stay in the contest, going into the half down by 10 at 28-18.

A jumper by Clark and two free throws by Enselek cut the deficit to eight (30-22) early in the third period, and the disadvantage was still only 10 after a Enselek jumper made the score 37-27 with 5:33 remaining in the frame. However, the Garnet Chargers managed just one field goal for the remainder of the period and then had more than eight minutes without a field goal to start the fourth frame as the Britons managed to pull away.

Union will be back in action tomorrow when the team takes on Loras College beginning at 3:30 p.m. (ET) for its second and final game in Puerto Rico.
