Matsoukas, Walsh Lead Union to 1-1 Tie at #12 Princeton

PRINCETON, N.J. - Sophomore Riley Walsh's ninth goal of the season would bring the Union College women's hockey team even with #12 Princeton in the second period of Saturday afternoon's contest, and junior Sophie Matsoukas's 44 saves in the Union net would keep the two teams even as they'd go on to play to a 1-1 tie at Hobey Baker Rink in Princeton.

Walsh would pick up a loose puck just shy of the red line seven minutes into the middle period, and would go on a two-on-two with junior Ashley Adams. Walsh would carry across the blueline, make a short self-pass to the outside of her Tigers defender, and fire a shot over the shoulder of Princeton goalie Jennifer Olnowich for her second goal of the weekend.

Walsh's goal would be her ninth of the year, now two clear of first-year Maddie Leaney for the team lead, and into the top 10 of the ECAC Hockey leaderboard. Walsh's 16 points are five more than Leaney and senior Emily King for the team-best in that category.

Matsoukas's 44 saves is the season-best for the Ottawa, Ontario native. She'd make six stops alone in the overtime period, including four from point blank that would keep the game tied. Matsoukas stopped 13 shots from leading Princeton goalscorer Sarah Fillier alone, who's 13th all-time in the Tigers record book just shy of halfway through her senior season.

The performance would come just one day shy of the one-year anniversary of her career-best 56-save act in Union's 4-1 victory over then #15 Princeton. The junior has stopped 146 of 151 shots faced in her three career games against the Tigers, good for a scorching .967 save percentage.

Princeton would open the scoring less than three minutes into the game, as Jane Kuehl would score from almost the exact spot Walsh did, in a similar way- over the left shoulder of Matsoukas from the bottom of the right circle- to give Princeton an early 1-0 lead.

Princeton would outshoot Union 14-4 in the first, before the Garnet Chargers responded with a 2-0 lead with attempts on net in the second before Walsh tied the game up. Princeton would outshoot Union in all four frames, but Matsoukas would stand tall in the Garnet Chargers net to keep the two sides even. Both teams would be unable to cash in on the power play, as Union went 0-for-4 while Princeton went 0-for-3.

Union (4-12-2) returns home with a point and a half from their weekend trip to #7 Quinnipiac and #12 Princeton, and will get set to face crosstown rival Rensselaer in a home-and-home next weekend. The set is scheduled to begin on Friday at the Houston Field House, before Union returns home after the completion of one of two season long five-game road trips when the two teams meet at Messa Rink on Saturday. Puck drop for both games is slated for 6:00 PM.
