Union Battles #8 Maine

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College men's hockey team dropped a tough game to #8 Maine, 3-1, on Wednesday night at Messa Rink.

Sophomore John Prokop was the lone goal scorer for the Garnet Chargers. Junior Caden Villegas and sophomore Brandon Buhr both registered assists.

Union went 1-for-5 on the powerplay and held Maine scoreless on the player advantage.

Maine jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period. Maine took a 1-0 lead after Felix Trudeau put home a rebound less than three minutes in. Later in the frame, Harrison Scott forced a turnover in the neutral zone and scored on a breakaway opportunity to give Maine a 2-0 lead.

The middle stanza remained scoreless with both teams generating chances. Union's best chance came late in the second period when sophomore Carter Korpi intercepted a pass and took it up ice, but the Black Bears regained possession right in front of the goalie.

Union came out firing in the third period and took advantage of back-to-back power-play opportunities. An initial shot from sophomore Brandon Buhr rebounded straight back to Prokop high in the slot. The blueliner sent a one-timer through traffic to cut the lead to one.

Sophomore Kyle Chauvette made 21 saves in the loss while Victor Ostman stopped 22 shots in the win.

Union heads north to Vermont for a two-game series with the Catamounts beginning on Friday. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Gutterson Fieldhouse.
