Middle Periods Provide the Difference in 63-40 Win over Bard

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – The Union College women's basketball team outscored Bard College by 24 points in the second and third periods on the way to a 63-40 victory in Liberty League action on Wednesday evening at Stevenson Athletic Center.

Sophomore Jelena Perovic led all players with 14 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the field in just 16 minutes of action, while junior Jenna Forman came one rebound short of her first career double-double with 10 points, nine rebounds and four blocks. Senior Kennedy Clark added 10 points as well for Union (3-4, 2-1 Liberty League).

Shirley Dong led Bard (2-5, 0-3 Liberty League) with 11 points and eight rebounds.

The Garnet Chargers shot 49.1 percent (28 of 57) from the field in the victory, but the visitors were even more efficient around the net: Union connected on 25 of 39 shots (64.1 percent) inside the arc and held a commanding 42-8 edge scoring in the paint. Bard finished the evening shooting 32.7 percent (16 of 49) from the floor.

Ella Perreault scored the opening bucket of the game for Bard and the Raptors did not trail for the entirety of the opening frame, leading by as many as five points before a layup by first-year Morgan Schultz got Union back within three (17-14) after 10 minutes.

Union kept up the momentum by starting the second stanza on a 13-0 run to finally take control of the game. Senior Maddy Mandalinci started the run with a layup and four teammates also scored during the run, which spanned more than six minutes and saw the defense limit Bard to 0-for-7 shooting and force six turnovers. A three by senior Maura Conan got the lead back up to 10 later in the frame before a late basket gave the visitors a 32-24 lead at the half.

The tide continued to turn in the third quarter, in which Bard scored the first two and last two points of the frame but saw Union rattle off 17 straight points in the middle to build up a 49-28 edge after 30 minutes. The visitors hit 6-of-7 shots from short range to keep command of the game, with the only long range strike coming from first-year Casey Weeran. Forman and Clark had a team-leading four points each during the stint, which allowed Union to cruise through the final frame. A Forman layup and back-to-back buckets from Perovic gave Union its largest lead of the evening at 57-30 with 6:42 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Union will take next week off from competition before returning to action on December 19 and 20 at the Puerto Rico Clasico. The Garnet Chargers will play their first of two games in San Juan on December 19 against Albion at 4 p.m.
