GENEVA, N.Y. – Hobart College pulled away from the Union College men's basketball team in the second half to deal the visitors a 64-50 defeat in Liberty League action on Friday night at Bristol Gym.
Union (4-18, 3-12 Liberty League) was led by senior
Brian Noone with 10 points and classmate
Mike Manley with nine points. Junior
Edward Baptiste and first-year
Lemar Fulmore Jr. chipped in eight points apiece as well.
Carter Meshanic had 12 points and brother Jackson added 11 to pace a well-balanced effort for Hobart (13-9, 9-6 Liberty League).
Hobart started the game with nine of the first 11 points in the game's opening three minutes, but Union settled in with buckets from Noone and senior
Justin Regis. The deficit was two after a layup from Baptiste with 13:41 left, but the visitors missed their next 13 shots from the field in allowing the Statesmen to score the next nine and build up a 22-11 lead. A 9-2 run got Union back into the game, however, and a last-second layup by Noone lowered the deficit to six (30-24) at the half.
Noone led the visitors with 10 points in the opening period, hitting 5-of-9 shots from the field. The visitors shot 39.3 percent (11 of 28) from the field in the opening frame while weathering a Hobart attack that took 35 shots but hit only 1-of-11 from long range.
The second half was a different story for the visitors, however, as Hobart heated up from the field while Union went cold. The deficit was 11 after a Lovisolo jumper with 14:24 made the score 41-30 in favor of the home team, before the Statesmen went on a backbreaking 19-3 run over the next six minutes to put the game away.
Union's reserves closed the game strong, ending the night on a 15-0 run and keeping Hobart off the scoreboard for the final 5:58 of the contest. Fulmore had a team-best six points during the later stages, while senior
Eamon Fitzpatrick and first-year
Neil Daterao netted their first collegiate buckets as well for the visitors.
Union finished the game shooting 36.2 percent (21 of 58) from the field, while Hobart ended the evening at 40.0 percent (26 of 65).
Union will close out the road portion of the 2022-23 schedule tomorrow with a 4 p.m. matchup at Rochester Institute of Technology.
